Frequently asked questions
How do I unlock a PDF online?
Upload the locked PDF to Unlock PDF, enter the password you use to open it and press Run. The file is decrypted on our servers and you get back a copy with no password and no restrictions, ready to print, copy, merge or edit. It is free for 3 files a day, with no account needed.
Can I unlock a PDF without the password?
Only when the file opens without one. Many PDFs have no open password but carry owner restrictions that block printing, copying or editing; for those, leave the password field empty and the tool removes the restrictions. If the PDF asks for a password before it opens, you must know that password, because the tool only removes what the password you provide allows.
I forgot the password to my PDF. Can PDFMaster recover it?
No. The tool does not guess, crack or brute-force passwords: an open password is real encryption, and without it the content is unreadable to us as well. Check with whoever sent you the file, your password manager or the email it arrived with; once you have the password, unlocking takes seconds.
How do I remove the editing, copying or printing restrictions from a PDF?
Upload the file and press Run. If it opens without a password, PDFMaster rewrites it without the owner restrictions, so the print, copy and edit commands work again in any viewer. If it also has an open password, type it first and both the password and the restrictions are removed.
Is it legal to unlock a PDF?
Unlocking a file you own or are authorized to modify, such as a bank statement, a form you must fill in or a document you protected yourself, is normal use. Removing protection from someone else's copyrighted or confidential document may break the law or your agreement with them, so only unlock files you have the right to change.
Is unlocking free, and how many PDFs can I unlock per day?
Yes, Unlock PDF is free with no ads and no account: everyone gets 3 files a day and the count resets daily. Each job takes one PDF, so if you have batches to unlock every day, Premium is built for heavier use.
Is my password safe when I unlock a PDF online?
The password and the file are sent over HTTPS, used once on our servers to open the document, and never stored or logged. Both the locked original and the unlocked copy are deleted as soon as the job finishes. Nobody reads your documents and nothing is shared with third parties.
Why does the tool say the password is incorrect?
The file has an open password and the one you typed does not match it. Passwords are case-sensitive, so check capital letters, spaces and keyboard language; either the open password or the owner password of that exact file will work, but a password from another document will not. Without a matching password the file cannot be unlocked.
